I haven't posted fic here for about 6 months. I'm supposed to be using Dreamwidth as my fic archive back up for if AO3 ever goes down. That's not good archiving behaviour.

Also, hi! I am fine and [personal profile] lilacsigil is fine! We're almost to the end of all the current medical shenanigans. It's very tiring.

st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
I passed the New Year by drinking half a bottle of champagne left over from Christmas and falling asleep. I am all class.

Re the horrifying bushfire situation, [personal profile] lilacsigil and I are currently
- not on fire
- very worried about people in fire areas
- may be on fire later in the summer
- having conversations on evacuation procedures and hating that this is our life now

It's rough, and I'm surprisingly upset by all the climate change deniers flushing out of the woodwork as the country burns. (This is a surprise because I know they're out there, I know what their agenda is, and there are better things to blow my mental cope on than their bullshit. And yet it still upsets me.)

I am seeking solace in Yuletide - so many good fics. (And also so many fandoms I've never heard of, which is great. Fandom is a big, sprawling land of people who love things, and it heartens me.) I have nowhere near read everything I want to, and have barely dipped into the Madness collection, but I want to get some recs out before reveals later today.

My gifts
I was so lucky this year!! Two in the main collection and a tiny gem of a treat from Madness:

Moonbase Theta, Out (Podcast)
An Evening in the Garden (Rated General, Roger Bragado-Fischer/Alexandre Bragado-Fischer)
A lovely gem of a moment, set before Roger goes into space to live on Moonbase Theta. Just so sweet and gentle and romantic.

A Discovery of Witches (TV)
In a Witch's Blood (Rated Explicit, Diana Bishop/Matthew Clairmont)
A whirlwind party at Sept-Tours, with Diana and Matthew negotiating vampire society. Sweet and romantic and hot.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street (book)
Interweave (Rated Explicit, Keita Mori/Thaniel Stephenson)
I am so glad to have gotten fic for my favourite read of 2019 and this is wonderful: perfectly in character, perfectly hot. Synaesthesia, ropes and clockwork. So good.

Recs:
Imperial Radch: (Shut up, I'm reccing all three fics because they're that good.)
High Above the Trees (Rated G, Breq and Awn Elming)
One of the best Awn Lives AUs I've come across, and an excellent, excellent picture of life with the Rrrrrr.

Worthy of Attention (Rated G, Gem of Sphene and Translator Zeiat)
Gem of Sphene and Translator Zeiat, tremendously weird in all the right ways, and also a surprisingly dark look at what it's like to be a Presger-grown translator. (Are they Significant? Zeiat doesn't actually know.)

Still Left in Want of Mercy (Rated Teen, Mercy of Kalr)
Mercy of Kalr POV, and it's so good! Seivarden is a mess, but a very Seivarden mess, and Mercy of Kalr helps her figure out some things. Also, I got a great Seivarden song out of this fic, too, which I greatly appreciate.

The Exorcist:
Little Church Mouse (Rated G, Mouse)
Some lovely backstory for Mouse, filling in the space between where we see her in flashbacks, to where we see her in the series.

The Middleman:
The Rock Star Reunion Irrelevancy
A really fun, punchy hair rock case, with lots of clever one liners. (Sweet child o' mine, Dubbie!)

Bake-off RPF/Untitled Goose Game:
To Do In Tent (Rated G)
Just the best definition of 'soggy bottom' ever. Clever and funny and full of terrible (excellent) puns. Puns and buns.

Sandman Comics:
An Explorer of Delirium (Teen, Delirium of the Endless)
From Yuletide Madness, appropriately. Joyful and a bit terrifying, as a Delirium story should be.

Russian Doll:
Commence! (Rated Teen, Nadia and Alan)
A lovely 'what happens next' story, as Nadia and Alan visit their friends, and try to piece together what actually happened to them.

Batwoman (TV):
Stir and Cook Slowly (Rated General, Mary Hamilton and Kate Kane)
This has a Jewish Kate Kane approaching Beth's yarzheit, and Mary trying to find a place as Kate's sister.

Anne of Green Gables:
Altogether Too Queenly (Rated Teen, Katherine Brooke/Anne Shirley)
I love Katherine, and this gives us some relationship history that really suits her character, and an excellent inner voice that really suits Katherine's character.

221b Baker Towers:
Full House, (Not rated)
221b Baker Towers is a shared Sherlock universe that reimagines the original characters as POCs living on a council estate in London. (You can read more about it at this tumblr: 221b Baker Towers: About.) This fic is fantastic, imagines Watson as part of a three generation family speaking Pashto round the dinner table, imagines Sherlock as trans, and puts together an excellent casefic of marginalised people. It's really well developed, and I would watch this series if it were in my TV.

Ugh, such a good Yuletide. I'm still reading.
st_aurafina: Topiary plant in a pot bent over by a red christmas bauble (Yuletide: Topiary)
Dear Yule Goat,

Thank you for writing for me this year!

I am very okay with optional details, so if something I've mentioned here doesn't suit your writing preferences, please feel free to ODAO. Also, please feel free to include as many or as few of the nominated characters as you like. Whatever you do, please enjoy writing! I promise I will enjoy your fic. I'm just really excited that there's going to be fic for a small fandom I love.

General Likes:
- I have a competence kink like woah. I love lateral thinkers and characters trusting their instincts and people trusting the experts in their teams to do their jobs well.
- Loyalty. I love it when people have their people's backs. I love it when someone pledges to keep their person safe. I love love love it.
- AUs of the non-mundane kind. I don't mind a coffeeshop AU but please make it in space! Highschool AU but with superpowers!
- Found families, people finding acceptance and learning to be safe and trust again
- Crossovers are fun. You can find my fandoms at [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina
- Touch-starved characters getting love
- Visible queerness being normal and accepted. It's not possible in all of my fandoms, but I did like the way that it wasn't made a capital I issue in The Watchmaker of Filigree Street.

Things that I don't like so much (but aren't deal breakers)
- Sad endings
- Embarrassment
- Angst

Concrete DNWs:
Character death, partner loss, grieving, pregnancy, terminal illness, body horror, body fluids, teacher/student, employer/employee, non-con.

Ratings/Pairings/Kinks:
- Anything from gen to explicit is wonderful. Porn is great! But not essential!
- Het/Femslash/Slash is welcome, unless I've specified (such as in The Watchmaker of Filligree Street or Batwoman.)
- Kinkwise, D/s overtones, impact play, bondage are all great. Other things are unlikely to squick me, unless they're specifically in my DNW list, so if the story takes you there, that's fine.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Batwoman, A Discovery of Witches, A Simple Favour, Moonbase Theta Out )

Miscellanea
I have talked about some fandoms more than others, but that does not indicate a preference of any sort. I would be happy with fic from any of these fandoms.

If we've matched on a longer fandom and you're looking for other options, a few of my fandoms are short and easy to absorb:

Moonbase Theta, Out is a podcast that has very short episodes, and the first season is less than two hours long. You can find it (and a list of character names and pronoun preferences) here:
Moonbase Theta, Out

A Simple Favour is a movie, so has less than two hours commitment.

Batwoman is, as of writing this letter, only five episodes long so far.

My partner is [personal profile] lilacsigil or [tumblr.com profile] laraleftlane and she will be happy to sneakily answer any questions about my likes and dislikes. She will keep this secret from me, (possibly forever, because that's how she rolls.)

For stalking purposes, you can find me most places under st_aurafina. I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina and [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina.

st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
Ack, things are so busy at the moment - I'm one pharmacist down at work (and it's my dad, which brings a whole other lot of issues), and it's summer-holiday frantic in the shop, so there's not a lot of space between sleep-dispense-eat-sleep. I am surviving, but my brain is a little odd.

Dad needs a double knee replacement, which he is determined to have done simultaneously. I am hoping his surgeon won't let this happen, but Dad is persuasive and has enough medical knowledge to sound like he might know what he's talking about even if he actually does not. I'm worried about him, and I'm worried about my own knees which are, of course, more painful when I worry about them. I know it's not possible but I swear I can feel them crumbling away second by second. In any case, my family reacts to stress and uncertain futures by screaming and panicking, so I'm fending that off, dealing with my own knee-anxiety, and running a business on three wheels. It's a lot.

At least the cats are happy and healthy and not bitten by snakes. I must remember there is a long way down to the lowest bar. (The mowing man mowed the block next door to us, and my neighbour across the road had two tiger snakes in his garden. So. That's going to be an ongoing thing, and I'm planning to use my fire-evacuation phone list to let my neighbours know when the block is getting mowed, so they can be alert.)

Yuletide has been spectacularly fun this year! I feel like the drama was less? I certainly enjoyed the reading and the atmosphere. I got five lovely gifts:

Good Luck Roomba Witch
A five-minute fandom based on this gorgeous print.

After the Ball (2729 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Good Luck Roomba Witch
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Roomba Witch, Shop-vac witch, Hoover witch, Fox Familiar - Character
Summary:

In which Cisco attempts to fly a roomba.

This is hilarious teen peer-group pressure at its best. It's full of pranks and adorable roomba anthropomorpism, fox-familiars, and clever little household magics. And a training montage! (Sings "You need a montaaaage!")

Reports of Witches Falling (2455 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: good luck roomba witch - ofsparrows (Artwork)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Roomba Witch, Shopvac Witch
Summary:

The Roomba is great. You can just switch it on and leave it. It gets in all the corners. The attending physician says Anurag is lucky he didn't die.

Ugh, omg, the world-building in this. The glorious bi-cultural witch culture developed - I want to read a whole series set in this world. I want to see the big-screen visuals of this fic. It's beautiful. Read this if you like families being kind but still families, if you like questions of identity, if you like romance that bursts into being with the matter of a few words, if you like clever quippiness that hides underlying sensitivity. Just read it.

The Haunting of Hill House
A Drawer Full of Gloves (1117 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Haunting of Hill House (TV 2018)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Theodora "Theo" Crain/Trish Park
Characters: Theodora "Theo" Crain, Trish Park, Shirley Crain
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

The gloves are left on the side of the trashcan and Theo learns it’s okay to feel.

I loved Theo in the series, and this fic gives me Theo branching out in the world past the events of the finale. I loved how careful but brave Theo is, and I love the developing relationship she has with Trish. It made me so happy to read about them being fiercely in love and finding their way towards stability.

The Thing in the Walls Wants Your Spare Change
This is a short story (which I highly recommend for the feel-good cosiness of it), that you can find here: The Thing in the Walls Wants Your Spare Change.

Apartment Dragons (1147 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Thing in the Walls Wants Your Small Change - Virginia M. Mohlere
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Caro/Aly
Characters: Caro, Aly, Nana - Character, The Dragon (The Thing In the Walls Wants Your Small Change)
Additional Tags: Fluff, Post-Canon, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Caro’s Nana comes for a visit.

I knew from the story that Caro's nana was a little bit magical herself, and this story of her visiting Caro and getting to know the little creature that lives inside the walls is a delight. Nobody can withstand Nana's love! The fic also has more of the Caro and Aly romance which is just delightful.

Gold Standard (The Thing in the Tunnels Wants Rather More) (1062 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Thing In the Walls Wants Your Small Change - Virginia M Mohlere
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Caro, Aly, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Dragons, Chicago (City), Snow
Summary:

Caro's first winter in Chicago

This was a Madness treat, and it really was a treat! Caro goes exploring through wintery Chicago (one of the things that I asked for was Louisiana-born Caro making the adjustment to what I presume is a vastly different kind of winter and this fic answers that in spades) and finds more of Chicago's little magics.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/New Year/that week of weirdness. Welcome to 2019!

Yuletide Lucky Thirteen! Who'da thunk? Hey, author! Hi! We have fandoms in common and that's great.

Don't be startled by the length of this thing. I write long letters – that's my way of flailing earnestly about the things I love. If there are things in my request that don't work for you, I am good with optional details being optional. I am going to be okay with what you write. We love the same thing. Please don't stress out about this assignment. I want you to have fun.

I've got my general likes and dislikes pinned down by now, so I'm cutting and pasting them here.

Likes and Dislikes )

Onto the specific fandoms. I've written more about some than others – please don't take this as an indication that I have a favourite. Some of them are big canons! Sometimes I have lots of ideas! I definitely do not have a preference for one over the other. I would genuinely love work about any of these fandoms.

The Thing in the Walls Wants Your Small Change, Good Luck Roomba Witch, 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds, The Haunting of Hill House (TV 2018), Imperial Radch series, The Strange Case of Starship Iris )

The Strange Case of Starship Iris is a short podcast – just eight episodes.

Real Life Things
This got long: sunburn, beautician, eye exam, sick cat but he gets better, cooking )

Fannish Things

For Yuletide, I wrote Murderbot Diaries, for [personal profile] muccamukk, which was enormous fun both because Mucca is great, and because Murderbot is awesome. (If you haven't read it, but you like stories about cranky AI-types, I highly recommend it: The Murderbot Diaries)
I'll post the fic here soonish but this is it:
Handshake Protocol (8651 words) by st_aurafina
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams, The Middleman (TV), Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Murderbot (Murderbot Diaries), C-3PO (Star Wars), R2-D2 (Star Wars), Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ida (The Middleman), Marvin (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Data (Star Trek), Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen | Breq
Additional Tags: Crossover, Travel, Time Travel, 5 Things, Grumpy AIs, Elevator Music, This is not a hero's journey okay
Summary:

Murderbot doesn't want to be a hero or take part in someone's incredible journey. Why does it keep bumping into people who think it will?

- [personal profile] sholio is running a Dark Matter exchange, while the love is still strong after cancellation. There's a comm, [community profile] we_are_the_raza, and a planning post, here. This isn't a fandom of mine, but [personal profile] sholio's exchanges are good ([community profile] ssrconfidential, for Agent Carter, was heaps of fun) so I'm signal boosting for any Dark Matter fans on my flist. (And I really need to watch this; I've seen the first few eps, but it kind of fell off my radar.)

- [personal profile] lilacsigil watched her first episode of Brooklyn 99 today! She has chronic vertigo, and the single camera style of the show is impossible for her to watch. She bravely told me to watch and enjoy it without her. ("Go on without me!" she said. "I'll only hold you back!") I desperately wanted her to know the wonder that is Captain Raymond Holt, so today we tried watching it on the small screen of my tablet, and she managed it relatively easily. This bodes well for the first season of the Exorcist, which is wobbly but not quite as bad as Brooklyn 99. The second season is a little steadier, so far (we're at 2.03 now) but I don't trust it not to get wobbly as soon as Tomas and Marcus get to the place where this season's case will be. (Their scenes are definitely the wobbliest.)

- Speaking of vertigo, I have been playing Slime Rancher, and whooah, I can't handle first person shooter-style gaming. I have to play it in ten minute bursts or I get travel sick. And it's killing me, because the game is so cute! The slimes are ridiculous! Ugh, brains and perception. So messed up.

This is an older link, and I'm not sure where I picked it up, but it's really interesting.

History
21-Year Old WWII Soldier’s Sketchbooks Reveal a Visual Diary of His Experiences
Just really beautiful and sparse, and sad. (CN: there's a sketch of a dead body in here, with some blood. It's not realistic, but it is intense, or I found it so.)

Health:
Black Triangle Scheme
Apparently these black triangles are going to be showing up on Australian medications, as part of a scheme to increase recording of adverse reactions. It's a bit ominous, though, right? I mean, that's going to increase anxiety straight up.

Updating medicine ingredient names - list of affected ingredients
Also from the TGA, and annoying as all hell, we're going to be standardising medication names to US terminology. Which is all fine and intuitive if we're talking about frusemide becoming furosemide or cyclosporin to ciclosporin, but amethocaine to tetracaine? That's going to be confusing. And bee venom to honey bee venom is just wrong. We don't call them honey bees over here. People are going to get wires crossed. At least adrenaline is staying, and (presumably) paracetamol.

Craft (Okay, it's mostly crochet)
Crochet Microwave Finger Gloves
[personal profile] lilacsigil, looking over my shoulder: Is that a kink thing?
Me: I'm... not sure.

Avocado collar
This is a paid crochet pattern, but it's AMAZING.

Fibre Burn Chart
For all my pyromaniac friends, not just [personal profile] lilacsigil: it helps you identify an unknown fibre by setting it on fire and observing its behaviour. Odour of celery? Nylon. Open lace-like ash? Weighted silk. (The author of the chart says I keep one in the sewing room and one in my purse with collapsable scissors and a lighter in an old candy tin -- portable burn test kit!)

nb: A portable burn test kit does not make a for good legal defense.

And hello to new people from the Post-Reveals Yuletide Friending Meme!
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Spirit)
I have tried to make this entry so many times since the Yuletide archive opened. Working retail at Christmas is a big old bummer. Be nice to your retail workers; they are stressed and tired from dealing with assholes. (Don't be an asshole in shops. It's a good life lesson and nobody will spit in your coffee.)

For Yuletide I got five lovely stories: two in the main collection and three in Madness. They were all for two of my micro-fandoms, which is always fun, because there are so many ways to interpret tiny fandoms, and people went in really interesting directions with both. It was a great Yuletide!!

For the music video for Dua Lipa's song New Rules (Here: New Rules // Dua Lipa) I got so many magic flamingo women living empowered lives. (This is an excellent thing.)

Time-slippy and weird, slightly too creepy to be comfortable but very welcoming, the Confidante is a hotel where women look after other women while effortlessly standing on one leg. It's amazing.

And in a 180 degree mood swing, I got two fics for Beautiful Losers II, the painting by Vettriano (which you can see here: Beautiful Losers II) It's a dark, fraught kind of image that lends itself to all kinds of kinks, and I love where these two fics went.

The amount of political menace that seeped into this fic is astonishing. I was amazed at the world building and the tension between the three characters.

I loved my Yuletide gifts this year - thank you so much, Yule-people, if you happen to come across this entry. It was a great exchange, and I feel very lucky.
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: panic!)
Welp, I have lived long enough to have reached my twelfth Yuletide. I am surprised and pleased at this outcome, especially after the way that 2017 rolled in for the whole world.

Anyway. Yuletide is always fun for me, I've always loved my gifts, and I try to generally be chill about the process, so I hope I can make your assignment easy and enjoyable for you, too. My letters tend to be long – please don't worry! I am chatty, and excited that we share a fandom. I am all on board with optional details being optional: you go and ODAO if you have to. We have connected over our love for a fandom. I will love what you write.

I've put down ideas for each fandom – they are honestly just random things that have occurred to me as I write my letter, things that would be cool to read. I'm not particularly attached to any one idea (or fandom, for that matter), but wanted to throw out some prompts in case you're the kind of writer that likes prompts or wants to get an idea of how I view the fandom. If you find those prompts too constrictive, please fly free! I love the fandom, I love all the characters, I love the way that people are fannish about the characters. I am a fan of fandom, so show me how you love the characters we matched on, and I will be happy. I promise.

After eleven of these letters, I've got my likes and dislikes pinned down, so I've cut and pasted them from previous letters:
Likes and dislikes )

I've talked about the specific fandoms under the cut, with possible scenarios or prompts. I talk more about some than others, but please understand I have no favourite. It's just what has come to mind as I write the letter. I would be happy with fic for any of these fandoms.

There are important spoilers here for Westworld and The Good Place, so if you're browsing letters, please be careful!

State of cat:
BAGGINS IS A FREE ELF! He's off sub-q fluids, he's got, as far as vets could tell while he was fully perfused, good renal function and low CK, and seems fit to make a full recovery from the snake bite. We are very lucky. So very lucky. Now we need to build him up and get him well, but he's doing a lot of that work himself, as cats do (MOSTLY BY JUMPING ON THE KITCHEN BENCH TO LOOK FOR HUMAN FOOD GRRR.) We think we found the site of the original bite - back right leg - because the skin got pink and raw there, but it's healing up. And as the vets said he would, he's doing his own physio, working on those damaged muscles in his wheel and playing with his brother. He's the best of cats. Champion of cats. Most cat of cats. <3

State of me:
Prednisolone is a beast, and it's slowly frying my brain, so I'm currently resorting to pink wine in the early afternoon. I'm not at work or anything, so I feel like that's a valid decision.

My concentration window has been appalling so I've barely read any Yuletide, beyond my wonderful gift fics, which has been sad-making because I love the process of reading and reccing and commenting. I'm hopeful that as the pred dose drops, my ability to get my eyes to stick to the screen will improve. I've got a doctor's appointment upcoming where we can review the rate of decrease and make some kind of long term plan. In the meantime, I'm average four-five hours of sleep a night, getting up at 5:30 with a weird unfocused mania that has me running around the house ~doing things and ~making plans. And crochet. Crochet is a life-saver at the moment. I still have knees, though right knee is making a whispered reappearance on the pain scale, possibly because I'm doing as much movement while I still can.

State of the Yuletide:
I wrote this for The Black Tape podcast - when my brain is up to it, I'll post it here properly. And answer comments, oh, gosh.

State of Livejournal:
I'm lucky/sheltered/Australian enough not to feel too threatened by the move of servers to Russia, so I'm not going to delete or stop cross-posting at the moment. I've got a permanent account over there, so I won't be giving them more money in the future, and basically Dreamwidth has been my homebase for a long time now, so I'm going to sit tight and see what changes. If you guys want to defriend over there, though, go for it. I totally understand, and I want people to feel safe.

I got two fics for the Demi Lovato music video, Confident, and omg, yay!

This is the source material, for anyone who wants to check it out: Demi Lovato - Confident.

Actually, I got three fics, because of issues with fandom tagging - someone kindly wrote me a pre-Yuletide drabble last week, which I totally meant to link but everything fell aside in the mess of MY CAT GOT BITTEN BY A SNAKE drama:

This is a whip-smart weaving of mythologies into a needling little story that kicks the video into gear and sets up some good consequences for the actions of the male character involved. And fistbump for someone else who believes that a drabble is one hundred words, also.

We had a deal.

Short and bitter and bone-dry, this one is filled with clever, cyber-punkish world building, and bitterness for the things that they've lost to the system that caught them. This has a kind of Wolverine-esque vibe to it, with lost memories and military undercurrents that fits really well. (I've always liked Michelle Rodriguez for a female Wolverine, myself, so it chimes extra right for me on that point.)

Just shut and go read this incredibly hot, incredibly intense femslash werewolf fic about two amazing women who got fucked over by the system, where one looks after the other and there is snuggling and wolves and loyalty and they're going to make it all right.

Just go read it.

And for myself, I've had a lovely comment from my recipient, so I'm very happy and relieved that it has all gone well. Happy Yuletide all around. Now to dive into the archive!
st_aurafina: monarch butterfly wings (Butterfly wings)
State of the Writing:
I posted a bunch of fics, but have a few more that only need a little bit of work. (Sanctuary wing-fic, this one X-Men/Sanctuary fic I've had hanging around, that Warehouse 13 fic that I thought was finished but actually had [put kiss here] in the body of the text, ffs.)

I'm going to try for a finish-a-thon this Nano. I just totted up my works in progress:
- Post-Winter-Soldier Save Bucky fic now jossed by, I think, four MCU movies, 55K
- Person of Interest 5 Things, with 3/5 of the things done, 15K
- Person of Interest post S5 fixit, 36K
- Person of Interest Sentinel/Guide fic I should never have started but it's so addictive, 5K
- Dracula 2013 Lucy/Mina/Grayson fic 6K
- Original fic, Boarding House of Together They Solve Crime, 50K

That's 167K of unfinished business, holy shit. That's not right. Something has to change here. I think I'm staging an intervention on myself.

Yuletide assignments were super early this year, huh? Mine is great - I'm excited about getting started on that, plus the letter reads like I wrote it. We're obviously very in sync, my recipient and I. For myself, I got my letter in right on the buzzer - Dear Author.

And I have a pinch hit for [community profile] femslashex that I absolutely need to get cracking on. Now.

State of the Garden:
- celery going strong
- snow peas starting to take off
- weird crinkly spinach in that stage where the more you pick, the more grows
- broccolini is down to one plant, but it still has... brockles?
- bok choy gone (it was a really good winter crop though.)
- seeds for button squash, butternut pumpkin, green zebra tomato, apple cucumber and leek are tiny but strong
- 2 zucchini seedlings are in and planning their strategic advance on the house
- coriander is going
- we put in some beetroot seedlings, mostly because apparently the greens are nice in salad? IDK.

State of the Me:
- I hurt my shoulder and the physiotherapist uttered the dread incantation 'rotator cuff'. It's not too bad, just inflamed, definitely not torn, but I'm being extra careful. I feel like I'm in a bad Victorian novel, always checking that my shoulder blades are down and back.
- The plebiscite on same sex marriage went down in flames, thank goodness, but that and world events in general have left me feeling fairly hopeless about the future. I'm still trying to get over the discovery that I live in a world where #nottheonion is a thing we need when reading news.
- I'm feeling generally flat and uncommunicative but I am trying to push out of it. I have NaNo write-ins I want to attend in Geelong. I've scoped out the locale, it looks nice and fairly accessible. I'm still nervous about it. Socialising is nervewracking, even when I want to do it.
- Pokemon Go is giving me life. Even though fewer people are playing, it takes the edge of my anxiety when I go to a new place, because I can scope out the poke-landscape.

State of the Cats:
Spring is here and we opened a window )
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: panic!)
Yuletide! It seems like Yuletide comes around faster each year, which I don't mind at all because I FREAKING LOVE this exchange. This is my eleventh, and I've had a great time every year.

So, first up and foremost: I love Yuletide. I will love what you write. I've loved every Yuletide fic I've received. Please don't stress out! Please have fun writing.

Secondly, I write long letters with lots of suggestions, but they really are just suggestions. If you're one of those writers that does not enjoy being fenced in, then fly free, you beautiful wild thing. And if we don't gel on character choice, ODAO is a-okay with me. I like all the characters in these fandoms, I love all these fandoms for the stories and the worldbuilding. If you have to, ODAO like it's a rodeo.

Things that generally tickle my fancy:

People! Gen, slash, femslash, het. Friendship fic, relationship fic, frenemies, enemies, sexy enemies. People putting their differences aside to work with each other. Backstory, AUs (though not so much the mundane kind), crossovers (see [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina for fandoms), teamwork.

Plot! Big sweeping plot, small canon-compliant plot, things for the characters to do while they're snarking at each other, things going on around them while they're getting it on. I like stuff to happen.

Competence! I have a huge competence kink. I love seeing people being really, really good at stuff. I love lateral thinkers and characters who follow their instincts and people putting their skills to use in unexpected ways.

Ladies! BAMF female characters who don't have to bring other female characters down to be BAMFs. Mothers and sisters and girlfriends and girlfriends and wives. Women with agency. Women treated with respect.

Representation! People of colour. People outside the gender binary. Queer identities and culture. Non-nuclear families, found families, poly families, family that is family because you get to define it.

Things that I don't like as much (but can handle if the story takes you there):
Sad endings, character death, angst, embarrassment.

Things I'd rather you didn't write:
Cross-gen relationships, incest, teacher/student, employee/employer, non-con.

Requests: The Black Tapes, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Inhuman Condition, Confident - Demi Lovato (Music Video), Wynonna Earp, Stranger Things )

Miscellanea

I do not have a preferred fandom. I haven't put them up in any order except how they came to me tonight as I write my letter. I might have written more about one than another, but that doesn't mean I'm fixated on that fandoms over others. I love them all, and I would be equally delighted with fic for any of them.

If we've matched on a large canon, and it's not going to work for you, I've got a few small or easily accessed canons here:

- Inhuman Condition is a short webseries about a psychologist who treats patients with paranormal characteristics. The main character is Michelle, who is played by Torri Higginson from SGA.
- Picnic at Hanging Rock is an Australian movie set in the Victorian era, about the disappearance of three schoolgirls. It's spooky and atmospheric. It's also as old as me, which means you'll probably find it in a bargain bin. (I guess that means I belong in a bargain bin, too. Oh, dear.)
- Confident by Demi Lovato is a music video. It also stars Michelle Rodriguez, there's a lot of fighting, and women having each other's back. It's great. With explosions.
- The Black Tapes is a podcast about a journalist following the career of a paranormal investigator and known sceptic. It's just finished its second season.

For stalking purposes, I'm [archiveofourown.org profile] st_aurafina and [tumblr.com profile] st-aurafina. All my previous Dear Author letters are here: Dear Author. If you have any questions, you're welcome to message my partner, [personal profile] lilacsigil. If you're writing Hanging Rock, and need an Australian beta, she'll do that. I totally volunteer her for it. (No, seriously, she will do that.)

Thank you so much! I hope you have a great Yuletide.
st_aurafina: (Yuletide: Super Secret)
Ours so far has been cool and occasionally rainy, which is lovely after Thursday's swelter.

I had three fics for Yuletide, which I've posted to my journal. I'm trying to do that more. The Archive might not be there forever, and it's a good idea to have a back-up. And besides, I'm trying to post more to comms on Dreamwidth, because that's somewhere where DW could do with more activity. I miss the days of busy comms on Livejournal.

This was my fic round-up:
A Beautiful Lie, (Killjoys, Johnny and Lucy)
Four things that didn't happen to Laurent, and one that could have changed everything, (Captive Prince, 5 AUs. SO MUCH FUN TO WRITE!)
Very Special Guest Star (The Muppets/Indiana Jones crossover. I never knew how much I would love writing Piggy. Wow.)

I finally get to rec the fics I betaed, too:

For [personal profile] lilacsigil
Five Ridiculous Things That Never Happened to Nancy Whitehead (and one awesome thing that did) (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl)
I love AUs, and I love Squirrel Girl, so this was awesome.

The Uncanny X-Gwen (Gwen Variants comics covers)
Fic for this Spider-Gwen cover - the one where she's all the X-Men, or at least, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. So. Many Gwens.

Jus Tertii (Daredevil comics)
Kirsten McDuffie (before she's dating Matt Murdock), who just wants to be a regular ADA, but can't because superheroes. I love that Stephen Strange consults for the District Attorney's Office. He so would!

No More Dominion (Spider-Gwen comics, Matt/Elektra, Foggy Nelson)
In this universe, Matt Murdock is evil, and he spends a lot of time considering his own evil. And his roommate at college is so unrelentingly nice, it's unbearable.

And one for [personal profile] monanotlisa:
Nobody Move (And Nobody Gets Hurt) (Killjoys, Dutch/Johnny, Dutch/D'Avin)
Set immediately after the last episode, a lovely friends-to-lovers rescue fic. Such awesome Killjoys fic this year!!

It was a really great Yuletide this year. (I say that every year, but it's true.)
